| 14.07.00 Hapag-Lloyd will further expand its North Atlantic services from August 2000 in cooperation with P&O/Nedlloyd and its new US subsidiary Farrell Lines. A new weekly link will be offered between the Mediterranean and the US East Coast. With the deployment of a Hapag-Lloyd ship in this service, the Farrell service recently acquired by the British-Dutch P&O/Nedlloyd will be improved to a weekly frequency. The service will be operated with six vessels of approx. 2,000 TEU (20' container units). Ports of call on the US East Coast will be New York, Norfolk or Baltimore and Charleston or Savannah and in the Mediterranean Malta or Gioia Tauro, Alexandria or Damietta, Haifa, Izmir, Naples or Salerno, La Spezia or Leghorn, the Spanish port of Cadiz or Algeciras and Lisbon (only eastbound). The final decision on the alternative ports will depend on the outcome of negotiations with terminals that are currently proceeding. The new Mediterranean service will be offered in addition to the service already offered by Hapag-Lloyd and its Grand Alliance partners via Malta to the North American East Coast. The more comprehensive port coverage will give Hapag-Lloyd customers additional direct links between the Mediterranean and the US East Coast on fixed weekdays. The new service is subject to approvals from the relevant authorities. |
